Lanvin Casts Real People as Models

Well, I'm officially in love with Lanvin's fall 2012 campaign. Luxury designers rarely break from tradition when it comes to advertisements (and understandably so — they have a business to run, and it's smart to repeat techniques that worked in the past, like dolling up gorgeous models). But creative director Alber Elbaz took a bold leap for fall, casting normal, everyday people in his new campaign. The result is refreshing, clever and sets Lanvin apart from the pack.

Granted, all of the models pictured are relatively good-looking; Elbaz certainly didn't cast any outright uglies, nor did he feature any plus-sized or even curvaceous women. But how often do you see someone over 60 in a high-fashion advertisement? Not very. (Though American Apparel does deserve a quick shout-out for its recent campaign featuring a stunning older woman.)

Bravo, Lanvin. Now how about a real-people runway show?
